Horton Hears A Who The Plot

It’s a classic Dr. Seuss plot – things go wrong and in the end, things just sort themselves out and life is fine. Way back in 1954 when he wrote the poem, the truths and values that he wove into the plot were very relevant and guess what - they are as relevant today as they were then. Some things just don’t change, thank goodness!

Let’s look at what the story is all about. The main protagonist of course is the large, lovable elephant, our hero, Horton. The action and scene is set in the jungle of Nool. Horton suddenly discovers that there is a whole world in a tiny speck of dust that flies past him and he is determined to protect the people who live in this microcosm – all called the Whos, living in this world called Whoville. Unfortunately, the kangaroo and her son, the black-bottomed eagle and all the other animals first laugh at him, then start getting very upset at what they consider Horton’s stupidity, or worse still, traces of his insanity.

So, from taking away his little speck of dust on a clover and casting it out far away to Horton following it and finally finding it is what the story is all about. Yes, the kangaroo and her cronies make sure that the eagle carries the clover far, far away to dump it into a bed of clover so that Horton can never find it. Horton, however, feels that he must save his little friends and so he sets off on a perilous two-day journey, following the eagle till weary and battered, he finds the clover. The Mayor of Whoville begs Horton to take care of them till they put their tossed-around world right again. Of course, the animals at that point of time just want to bind Horton up and pack him away from the regular world. But Horton asks the Whos to shout out as loud as they can so that the animals hear them. All the Whos get together to yell and scream and with a great deal of effort, finally they manage to do just that. And so, the tables are turned on the animals when they suddenly realize that what Horton says is true – they too hear the voices of the people of Whoville who all cry out in unison so that they can convince the animals about their existence.

Like all good stories, this too has a ‘happily ever after’ ending. The animals, especially the aggressive, cynical kangaroo vows to protect the Whos too and Horton is vindicated. So, all are happy and everyone lives together in harmony again.
