Horton Hears A Who The Characters

The two main characters in this story are Horton and the Mayor of Whoville. Of course, many of the animals play their part in the story as well and we find that even the animals that have a very small role are very well defined and well characterized.

Let's take a look at the main characters first. Horton isn't a new character but has featured in other Dr. Seuss books. What does happen in this one is that he of the saintly nature who will go to the ends of the earth for his friends and for those who trust him, looks even more of an angel than before. Just take a look at his angel wing ears! To think of Jim Carrey being the voice of this lovable elephant may just be stretching the imagination a tad much but one must remember how incredibly versatile the actor is. Horton's sweet nature runs like a beautiful ribbon throughout the story which is saved from being too sickly sweet with the interaction of all the other characters.

Steve Carell as the Mayor is probably a good choice - and he has had a bit of experience with animation film voice overs. The Mayor of Whoville has one son and - hold your breath - 96 daughters. There is a serious streak in him but his saving grace is how committed he is to the welfare of his people. Living as he does thinking his world is the center of the universe, he is astounded to find that he is just a cosmic speck in the order of things. What does appeal is how he tries to adjust and calls for help from a gigantic friend.

The other characters are the ones who liven up the plot. The tension in the story comes about with the Sour Kangaroo and her inquisitive ways. She cannot figure out Horton's speck and what she can't, she would rather get rid of. To this end, she enlists the monkeys and the eagle's help. The black bottomed eagle is the one who carries the speck of dust on the clover flower far, far away. All of them are egged on by the kangaroo's joey, Rudy Kangaroo, who, after a while, starts to wonder about how right his mother really is.

On the other side, we have Horton's friend, Morton who stays loyal to him though he has his doubts about the truth of Horton's story too. Then there are the characters who make a brief appearance like the Mayor's wife and Jojo the mayor's son who finally attains fame because his is the sound that breaks the sound barrier from the unheard to the heard.

A wonderful bunch of beautifully fleshed-out characters are the people in this jungle of Nool and it is a tale that grips as it unfolds around the wonderful Horton.
